The ICES Working Group on Pathology and Diseases of Marine Organisms (WGPDMO) provides annual reviews of national reports on the disease status of wild and farmed fish and molluscs in the ICES area. In 2004, the group published a first report collating this information from 1998-2002. This second report aims to provide an update on the status of the major diseases described in the original report and also to provide an overview of new diseases which have emerged since the previous report was published.

Viruses infecting marine molluscs ArchiMer

Although a wide range of viruses have been reported in marine molluscs, most of these reports rely on ultrastructural examination and few of these viruses have been fully characterized. The lack of marine mollusc cell lines restricts virus isolation capacities and subsequent characterization works. Our current knowledge is mostly restricted to viruses affecting farmed species such as oysters Crassostrea gigas, abalone Haliotis diversicolor supertexta or the scallop Chlamys farreri. French scallops: A new host for ostreid herpesvirus-1 ArchiMer

Sporadic high mortalities were reported among larval French scallops (Pecten maximus). Electron microscopy of moribund larvae revealed particles with the characteristics of a herpesvirus in association with cellular lesions. PCR and DNA sequencing showed that the virus is a variant of ostreid herpesvirus-1 that has already been described in clams and oysters. This is the first description of a herpesvirus infection of a scallop species. The virus was transmitted successfully from an extract of infected scallop larvae to uninfected scallop or oyster (Crassostrea, gigas) larvae, demonstrating that it is able to infect both species. In 1972, Farley reported the presence of herpes-type viral particles in adult American oysters (Crassostrea virginica) for the first time. Since then, this pathogen has been detected in various marine bivalve species, usually associated with massive mortality events. To date, herpes-type viruses have been detected in the following species: C gigas, Ostrea edulis, O. angasi, Tiostrea chilensis, Ruditapes decussatus, R. philippinarum and most recently, Pecten maximus.

Experimental herpes-like viral infections in marine bivalves: demonstration of interspecies transmission ArchiMer

Since 1972, herpes-like virus infections have been reported in several marine bivalve species around the world. Viral detection was often associated with high mortality rates in larvae and spat. To determine whether a single virus is able to infect different bivalve host species, we carried out experimental transmission assays. As a first step, 8 assays were performed to infect axenic Crassostrea gigas larvae with virus from infected C. gigas larvae using a previously described protocol. Evidence for interspecies transmission of oyster herpesvirus in marine bivalves ArchiMer

Since 1991, numerous herpesvirus infections associated with high mortality have been reported around the world in various marine bivalve species. In order to determine whether these infections are due to ostreid herpesvirus-l (OsHV1), a previously characterized pathogen of the Japanese oyster (Crassostrea gigas), PCR analysis was carried out on 30 samples of larvae collected from four bivalve species (C. gigas, Ostrea edulis, Ruditapes decussatus and Ruditapes philippinarum), most exhibiting mortality prior to collection. Bivalve mollusc farms are continuously exposed to variations of factors either natural (variation of salinity and temperature) or from man (heavy metals, HAP, phytosanitary) likely to alter the defence systems of bivalve molluscs. These alterations would explain, in certain cases, their sensitivity vis-à-vis certain marine pathogens and could in part be at the source of the episodes of massive mortalities seen periodically in oyster and mussel larval populations. That is why many studies concerning the contaminants' immunotoxicity are currently in progress.

The in vitro effects of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) on haemocyte and haemolymphatic parameters of the Pacific oyster, Crassostrea gigas, were tested using field concentrations (10(-7) and 10(-9) mg mL(-1)) observed in the Marennes-Oleron Basin (Charente-Maritime, France) and high concentrations (10(-3) and 10(-5) mg mL(-1)) observed during oil spills. Mass mortality in bivalves and the intricate case of the Pacific oyster, Crassostrea gigas ArchiMer

Massive mortality outbreaks in cultured bivalves have been reported worldwide and they have been associated with infection by a range of viral and bacterial pathogens. Due to their economic and social impact, these episodes constitute a particularly sensitive issue in Pacific oyster (Crassostrea gigas) production. Since 2008, mortality outbreaks affecting C. gigas have increased in terms of intensity and geographic distribution.
